The Graham High ‘Big G’ Band has a storied tradition going back over 80 years. Although details are sketchy, Mr. T. Marcus Gillespie served as the Principal, Athletics Coach, and Band Director during a period of time from the late 30’s to the mid 40’s. In 1948, James Spangler became the band director, and served until 1955. Mr. James H. ‘Jimmy’ Jones was named the band director in 1955, and remained in the position until his retirement in 1991. During his tenure the band grew in size and stature, and was generally regarded as one of the top programs in the area. The Band Room at GHS is now named in his honor. Upon his retirement, former Drum Major Mr. Mike Brown (GHS Class of 1975) was appointed to the position, and served through 2013. Another former Drum Major, Ms. Allison Deel (GHS Class of 2007), became the next director in 2013. Chuck Yost (GHS Class of 1978) was named the director in 2017, and currently serves in this position.
In addition to Mr. Yost, the current staff includes Guard Instructor Ms. Violet Asbury, and Percussion Instructor Mr. Corey Nunn.
The Band program at Graham currently fields a marching band in the fall that transitions into a concert band in October. The band competes in marching competitions and in concert band assessments. In addition, a Jazz Band class meets daily, and performs at concerts and at select home basketball games.
